Falaise country
Come and discover an authentic local Region, full of charm and serenity. It is waiting for you, easily accessible between the Pays d’Auge and the Suisse Normande, and only 45 minutes from the sea.
You will see its countryside :
plains where fields wheat and flax grow, interspersed with natural fault lines, green valleys where many rivers flow. Thanks to the superb natural environment here, leisure activities abound. For those who like to push themselves: canoeing, paragliding, mountain-biking, clay pigeon shooting and gliding. The richness of the region’s architectural heritage will surprise you by its diversity: here a chapel restored by a Japanese artist, there a country church decorated with Romanesque frescos, a rich balaquin (canopy), strange Orant figures.
Off the main roads, there are solidly-built farms, manor houses and châteaux in local stone, ancient remains of grand abbeys…
A stop at Falaise, regional capital with a rich heritage, is a must, to discover its medieval castle, the legendary birthplace of "William the Conqueror". The more recent past is not forgotten either, with the surprising Museum of Mechanical Figures, which will take you back to the years at the beginning of the 20th century, and finally the August 1944 Museum which describes the famous bloody battle of Falaise Gap.
In the Falaise area, land of the "Goustiers" (Officers of Local Gourmet Food Appreciation Societies) and gastro-
nomic centre, you can sample fresh produce with a regional flavour in the numerous restaurants and farm inns
:- Pommeau or Poiré as an apéritif, followed by dishes cooked with butter and thick cream.
- Between courses, perhaps you will try the famous "trou normand": a small glass of Calvados by itself or with a sorbet – often apple-based – before the dessert. It aids digestion and helps you to finish your meal.
- You must try our world-renowned regional cheeses: Camembert, Pont-L’Evêque and Livarot, all washed down with local cider "cidre bouché".
Situated 20 km from Falaise, Pont d'Ouilly, a little town full of flowers and greenery at the confluence of the rivers Orne and Noireau, has a lovely feeling of peace and serenity… but don’t be fooled, in fact it’s the capital of leisure activities :
canoeing, mountain-biking, archery, horse-riding, hiking and even paragliding !
On Sundays, you can indulge in quieter pleasures, strolling through the market in the morning and dancing in the afternoon at the waterside open-air café in the summer. Don’t forget to take a gastronomic break in the renowned restaurants of Pont d’Ouilly, where they prepare delicious food all the year round, with the accent on regional Normandy specialities.
The town specialises in welcoming groups, and several educational establishments come here, as do group holiday organisers and business groups, to take advantage of the varied, open-air leisure facilities, approved by "Jeunesse et Sports" (French Ministry of Youth and Sports).
Here you will find all that you need to hire to try canoeing, going out for one or two hours. For the more ambitious, there are trips down the River Orne to Clécy, 13km away, (return by minibus). Introductory sessions for beginners, or further training for others, always led by leaders with State diplomas. Changing rooms, showers, parking all available on site.
1½ hour archery sessions with equipment and instruction provided.
Discover the famous countryside of the Suisse Normande area by hiking : 4 circuits of 7 to 12 km are marked out with arrows. Mountain-biking: bikes for hire and escorts available on marked circuits of 10 to 25 km. Topo guides available for hiking.
At the leisure centre, by the river, there is something for everyone: a football pitch, basketball and volleyball courts, a pétanque piste, 2 asphalt tennis courts

Swiss Normandy is an area of Normandy that includes the Orne and Calvados districts, south of the River Seine. Its name comes from the River Orne that flows across the area, making deep gorges and cliffs and so creating spectacular rocky landscapes.
The main towns in Suisse Normandy are Thury-Harcourt, Clecy and Pont d'Ouilly. Nearby, Falaise, birthplace of William the Conqueror, makes for an interesting visit too.
A holiday in Swiss Normandy would not be complete without trying the area’s activities and sports. You could try boating or fishing on the many lakes and rivers, whilst canoeing and kayaking are also extremely popular. If you want to stay away from the water why not have a hike across the lovely Swiss Normandy landscape, climb up into the hills or even parasail from one of the many high outcrops. Alternatively, tennis and golf are readily available in Swiss Normandy too.
