The guest accommodation is a two-storied cottage, built in 1929, which is completely detached from the Main House. The cottage was once a coach house, and later provided accommodation for the gardener and housekeeper until Lisa, the owner/operator transformed it into a Bed and Breakfast in 2001. It now carries a five-star Qualmark rating.
The cottage offers total privacy to guests, all the while making certain they feel pampered and relaxed.
There is a full kitchen with a well-stocked fridge. Lisa will also make bookings at local or Wellington restaurants (Eastbourne is a 15-minute drive from Wellington.)
Recently, an outdoor heated 10-metre swimming pool and a spa pool have been added. Alongside this is an outdoor seating area with a wood fire, which provides a relaxing place to have a drink and a chat. Dinner can also be provided in the Pool House by arrangement.
Breakfast is served in The Gatehouse or in the Pool House with views over the pool, spa and garden. Quality and authenticity are important and, whenever possible, Lisa uses fresh and natural ingredients: jams and jellies made by Lisa, her family and friends from fruit grown on the property. Five hens lay fresh eggs for breakfast dishes and, for dinner, homegrown fruit, herbs and vegetables are used wherever possible.
The Gatehouse is the perfect retreat for couples seeking privacy and quiet, and it is still is close enough to Wellington to enjoy all the city attractions. As The Gatehouse is only available to one couple at a time, Lisa is on-hand to help guests plan their day and offer advice. Rates start from $395 per couple.
