Description:
The pleasures of Rye's cobbled streets are barely 5 minutes walk. Further afield you are within easy reach of Winchelsea, Battle, Bodiam, Canterbury, the Channel Tunnel and the Kent countryside.
The 'invitation only' golf links at nearby Camber are well known and the adjacent Sands are glorious at any time of the year. Golf courses can also be found at nearby St Leonard's and Seddlescombe. Other activities include sailing, windsurfing, fishing and an abundance of walks. The nature reserve at Rye Harbour boasts several hides.
Cycling is an excellent way of exploring Romney Marsh using the tangle of narrow lanes, where you can discover Norman churches and 15th Century smugglers pubs.

Adjacent One Bedroom Apartments, The Boathouse, Rye
Completed in 1992, these quality one bedroom split-level apartments have their own access and entrance via mahogany decked steps and sun balcony.
The purpose built apartments, located on a private quayside, provide superb views of passing yachts and the marsh beyond.
The secluded location and the almost hypnotic effect of the tidal river as it ebbs and flows will swiftly put you into a relaxed frame of mind.
Adjacent short term moorings can be organised (subject to availability).
Allocated parking for one car is available at the rear.

Each apartment has gas-fired central heating, and all heating, lighting and linen costs are included in the weekly rates.
The living area has comfortable seating, dining facilities and a fitted kitchen. A colour television is provided. The large picture windows look directly onto the river and marsh beyond to Rye harbour.
Comprehensive tourist information is maintained and a large scale map of the area is mounted on one wall to help you plan your expeditions.
The bedroom and bathroom are reached by descending 5 steps.
The bathroom includes a bath with shower attachment, washbasin, mirror with shaver point, W.C. and radiator.
The bedroom has either a king-size double bed or twin 3 foot wide single beds, chest of drawers and wardrobe. A duvet is provided. Linen is included in the price, but towels are extra, on request at £2.50/person/week.
A cupboard houses the central heating boiler with shelves for towels and linen.
Shared washing machine (between my 3 holiday apartments) and drying facilities are available in a separate utility room.

A garden table and chairs are provided for the balcony.
The apartment is available for adults only. The proximity of the river makes it unsuitable for small children.
Please note that the apartments are NO SMOKING and unfortunately we cannot accommodate pets.

Other: Our first visit to Rye. We found the flat very cosy + comfortable + perfect on a sunny winter morning to watch the sunrise. Rye is an ideal town for browsing = interesting bookshops + a good delicatessen + fantastic cook shop at end of High Street. We ate in the Flushing Inn which was very good + friendly service – ideal for a special meal + the Simply Spice – delicious Indian Food.
Dungeness RSPB was a good reserve with great hides. I’m sure we’ll come back to explore more!
Lynne + Amit Pagham/Bognor Regis

I wanted time away from a busy job and hectic home life and I found the perfect retreat in the Boathouse + Rye.
Morning coffee in town, long walks in the afternoon – an absolute perfect week and even a sprinkling of snow!
Donna Uden Berkshire 7-13 March ‘-04

STEPHEN + CATHERINE TEES (KIMPTON HERTS) 31ST MAY – 4TH JUNE 04

TYPICAL NOVEMBER WEATHER BUT APARTMENT WARM AND WELCOMING.
ATE FAR TOO MUCH (FISH CAFÉ RESTAURANT AND THE PLACE CAMBER SANDS RECOMMENDED- BUT BY NO MEANS CHEAP) AND WALKED IT OFF AT CAMBER + THE NATURE RESERVE. YPRES INN ALSO GOOD PLACE TO EAT. RYE AS QUAINT AS EVER
SALLY + STEVE, HILDENBOROUGH KENT 19-22 Nov 2004

Well-appointed spotless, warm apartment. Everything one needs. Housekeeper Mrs B... v. welcoming, and having learned we are newly married, left flowers + a card for us. Greatly appreciated. Good birdwatching at Rye Harbour. Hope to return!
John & Olive Mercer Sidcup, Kent 27-31 March 2000

Very warm reception, literally. We chose the hottest 2 weeks. Were kept entertained by workers from Environment Agency for 4 days on opposite bank. Watched birdlife including two herons behind house to the right, white egret twice, daily cormorant but no kingfishers. Have thoroughly enjoyed our relaxing holiday. We shall return. Thanks.
Rita & Keith Ormston Sidcup. Kent 9-23rd August 2003

Three days to chill out here. Bright/watery sun shone on use and we had good walks. Great bread from the Bakers. King sized bed is F.A.B!
Rich Sylvester
Chris Forrest 14-16th January 2005
Flat warm & comfy & v. clean (Thanks Mrs B.)
A wonderful break. Rye must have more Tea Shops / Cafes than anywhere else we’ve visited! Had a great time bird watching in Rye Harbour & Dungeness.
Saw a Bittern from the Bittern view point.
BRIAN + SUE BAKER Felpham, W. SUSSEX 7-9 JAN 2005

Friendly welcome from Mrs J.... This place is simply beautiful with the views, flat perfect. Eat out in Winchelsea Pub the Ship a place worth visiting for a meal & the Beefeater in Guestling A1 Hope to be able to come back. Proprietors really nice people and make sure you are comfortable.
Rita & George from Wimbledon SW19 5. 8.95

Flat was really lovely – could not wish for more. Nice setting – Weather was unpredictable but it was just the break we both needed, really peaceful we will both be coming back again in the future. Would recommend the Ship pub at Winchelsea Beach a visit also “Yesterday’s World” at Battle
Sue & Steve S Hurst Green, Sy 21.2.97

Had an excellent time. Everything you need in accommodation.
A visit to the Mechanical Music Centre Rye is a must. The curator is so informative, and 1½ hours is easily spent listening to him & his music.
Lily & Syd Stonehouse Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands 6 June 98

Enjoyable apartment. Enjoyed our stay except the weather! Went all round via British Railroad.
Ann & Dave Mesaros The Tacoma, Washington 6/13/98

A lovely week with perfect summer weather. Very comfortable & peaceful.
Try ‘The Mill’ – a bit expensive but it is your holiday!!
The food & atmosphere are super, not too formal.
‘Peggotty’s’ in town for the best coffee around. Again, a trifle dear but worth it and you only live once.
This is an excellent place to stay.
Clive & Judith Morgan Buckfast, Devon 1.8.98 - 8.8.98

Beautiful beach and best birdwatching at Rye Harbour & Winchelsea Beach
“This Castle hath a pleasant seat”.
Macbeth
Dam + Trevor London 8 + 9th August

Lovely welcome with tea-tray ready – flat is great- a haven of peace. Rye is super with old-fashioned service.
Best butchers shop we’ve seen for ages.
We’ll be back in the springtime.
George & Olga Wallman Herts 6/11/ - 13/11

Great apartment; great location, great weather; nuff said!
Dan & Gill Aston, Sheffield 31 July – 7 August 1999
Sunny & warm almost all the time.
Very comfortable flat.
Rye Harbour good for birdwatching & walk
Enjoyed Hastings & Battle MUST, Dover Castle well worth a visit. Sissinghurst Castle & gardens lovely at this time of year. Rye is a very interesting place well worth another visit, plenty of eating places ranging in price from fish & chips to a 5 course meal
Enjoyed every moment of our holiday!
Ron & Eve Jones Blackburn Lancs. 3-7-99 to 17.7.99

ESCAPED AT LAST!
(RYE = INTERESTING)
(CAMBER = WINDY)
TRY THE “LEMON GRASS” FOR GOOD THAI FOOD 8/10
THE “MILL RESTAURANT” (NEAR TOURIST INFO) GOOD BUT STARTERS OVERPRICED 7/10
THE GHANDI TANDOORI 7/10 (SAT NEXT TO SPIKE MILLIGAN)
Julie & Stewart Jarrett Sittingbourne, Kent. FEB 2000

Very comfortable and ideally situated apartment; found Rye a nice town, with the Ypres by far the best pub for food & ale; take care when taking a 3000 bus to Northiam; they might not run due to lack of drivers! Rye Harbour a bit dull but Icklesham is a really beautifully located village with the Queen’s Head a brilliant pub.
Carla Mastbrock
Marco Daane Pijnacker the Netherlands 16th – 23rd Sept 2000

Sunshine and Showers – but a really lovely week.
After a warm welcome from Patricia, a most comfortable stay in the delightful apartment.
With visits to National Trust properties, and some good meals at the Top O’Hill, and several good walks, the week has been very happy.
Joan & Malcolm Maidenhead 13-20th May

We have had wonderful weather even though it is only Feb, perfect for enjoying the flat at its best. Rye is a little quiet at this time of year and it can be tricky to find something to eat locally. Try the Queen’s Head at Icklesham, and Cranberries tea shop for lovely cakes!
Avoid Fletchers tea shop – over priced.
Don’t bother with audio ghost tour of Rye.
Sally & Robert, Hayes, Kent 18/02/01 – 21/02/01

2nd visit. Very enjoyable week. Sissinghurst & Gt. Dixter lovely as ever. Excellent Mexican food at The Wooden Horse Rolvenden Layne.
Chinese takeaway very good.
Janet & Ian Lafbery Wakefield Yorkshire 17th – 24th June

Have had a very comfortable and enjoyable stay, considering we’ve had a very wet and windy weather (winds up to 90 mph, worse since storms of 1987)
Had an exhilarating walk to the beach at Rye Harbour.
We recommend : St Mary’s Church Tower (you need to be slim to get up stairs!) great views, Dungeness Lighthouse & R,H & D Railway. So much we haven’t seen! We would like to come again, maybe in summer!
Mark & Janet East Frogmore Park, St Albans Herts 28th Oct to 1st Nov 00

Our first visit to this part of England.
The flat and Rye lived up to our expectations. Recommend Ye Olde Bell, The Mint for toasted sandwiches and Poppy’s for coffee.
If you want to see birds, Rye Harbour Nature Reserve is excellent despite absence of Little Terns this year and RSPB at Dungeness is outstanding. If you haven’t been before, don’t miss the spectacular Beachy Head. But Hastings is appalling unless you’re into down-market antique shops.
P.S. Despite our address we’re both English!
Bob & Hazel Wicks Porthcawl, Mid. Glam 1st – 8th July 2000

Managed to dodge the worst of the weather and enjoyed some glorious sunshine. Ate out at the ‘Monastery’ and ‘Landgate Bistro’ – both doing special menus during the week. Spotted over 20 bird species from the window including a barn owl hunting in the field opposite. Look out for him between 4.30 to 5.30pm.
Andy & Lindy H. Enfield, Middx 21-2-01 to 25-2-01

So comfortable & thoroughly equipped. Leaflets + map v. helpful.
Recommend Gasparutti’s café in Market Road for light or main meals. In Udimore the King’s Head pub has good food and a welcoming landlord who is an authority on local history.
Try Small Hythe Place (N.T., home of Ellen Temy) on B2080, south of Tenterden. Very interesting, also brick-build 16th century chapel nearby.
V.g. birding again at Rye Harbour : Brent geese, sandwich terns, wheatears, turnstong, corn buntings + green woodpecker.
On bank opposite flat, pair of oystercatchers feeding in the evenings.
Second visit of John & Olive Mercer Sidcup, Kent (last visit March 2000) and we hope to come back
30 March – 6 April 2001
Excellent weeks holiday – only disappointment that is was not two weeks or more!
Queens Head Icklesham lived up to its reputation, so did Peace and Plenty at Playden – watch out for the Steak and Kidney Pudding – we will be back.
Thank you all.
Rita & Keith Sidcup Kent 18th Sept. 22 Sept

We’ve had a really good break despite dull weather. Thoroughly enjoyed the walks around Rye especially to Rye Harbour + Camber Castle where we saw a kingfisher + egret. The William the Conqueror Pub at Rye Harbour even serves Bishops Finger Ale! We’ve had meals at the Peace and Plenty P.H. A268 Playden 9/10 for food service surroundings etc, The Lemon Grass Thai in Tower Street 8/10 + Mahdi Spice Indian in Cinque Port Street 5/10. Best locations visited have been Sissinghurst Gardens (also worth visiting nearby Cranbrook re picturesque views of 2nd tallest windmill in England) Country Park at Fairlight and Brookland Church which has an unusual bell tower, an 1150 lead font with signs of the Zodiac and peoples occupations thereon like harvesting and killing a pig. To cap that there is a very old wall painting of the murder of Thomas Becket with a sword through his head! Thanks to Mrs B. for the friendly welcome.
Margaret + Andrew WRIGHT Ipswich, Suffolk 10th – 17th July 2004

Very friendly welcome. Flat very cosy & well equipped.
Bird watching from the window interesting. Red shank & little egret. Best food – Landgate Bistro. Smallhythe Place, Scotney Castle & Great Dixter well worth a visit, also some of the Romney Marsh churches.
Canterbury Cathedral magnificent, but the city on the whole disappointing, Rye never disappointing!
Doreen & Oliver Armstrong Oxon 6th Oct – 13th

Great visit –
Enjoyed : -
• watching the tide, the bunnies and the lambs (not eating any of ‘em)
• days out on bikes
• reading g this Visitor Book!
Did not enjoy :-
• pictures on the wall (the one in the bedroom is nightmare inducing)
• the prospect of leaving, so we extended our stay from 3 days to a week!!
John & Michael London E1 6th -13th April 2002

Everything A1
Had a wonderful 2 weeks, thanks. Weather perfect- Mrs B.
Inkermans Rye H. New Inn Winchelsea, Pasta in the Strand.
Weather perfect. 17 bird types from No. 9. (includes sparrows/starlings) and a further 11 roundabout.
Isobel & Wilf Lusted London 03-08-02

Our first visit to the Boathouse. This is a wonderful apartment. We thoroughly enjoyed our week in Rye. We recommend a ride on the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch miniature railway – for fun! We enjoyed climbing the church tower and also our visit to Lamb House especially the garden
Barbara and Maurice Banbury Putney – London 26-2ND NOV 2002

Our 3rd visit to the Boathouse, but I suspect, not our last.
Once again a very relaxing break, with the added bonus of lots of sunshine. The Queens Head at Icklesham is still excellent and we also enjoyed meals at Simply Italian and the Peace & Plenty (Playden). Sorry to be going home!
Richard & Christine Hedge End, Southampton 15 – 19 NOV 2002

Sorry not to have met Mrs B.
Hope you are feeling much better now Mrs B. Water is going to be our biggest memory of Rye. Rivers’ dykes, marshland, flooding and rain, rain, rain. Flat very warm & welcoming to dry out in.
John & Rose Bateman Wantage, Oxon 28-12-02 - 4-1-3

As usual a restful stay but we’ve had such glorious weather it certainly doesn’t feel like February!
Good walking and bird watching at Dungeness and Rye harbour and off to Winchelsea Beach on our way home. Thanks to Mrs B. for the ‘welcome’ tea tray and for keeping the flats so well. We’ll be back as usual.
Andy & Lindy H. Enfield, Middx 19-2-03 - 22-2-03

Visited on the wildest, wettest weekend of the year & still had a great time, the walk to Winchelsea Beach via Camber Castle was bracing. Great fun.
Lisa Marlow & Martin Jones Oxted Surrey 30th Jan to 2nd Feb 04

2nd stay, once again lovely stay
added bonus of sunshine all the time! So we could be outside visiting the nature reserve, bit of bird watching
ring plovers, redshanks, skylarks and reed buntings amongst them. Winchelsea beach is gorgeous.
Time ran out on us, it’s over all too soon!
Thanks Chris and Mrs B.
Chris & Bill Cranleigh Sy 15/3 - 18/3 03

Quiet and peaceful break, very comfortable.
Good walks around Rye and Nature Reserve beyond Rye Harbour worth a visit saw a Merlin. Ypres pub excellent salt marsh lamb a local delicacy! Plus good ale and decent wine list and only 5 mins walk away.
Bob & Liz Ashbourne Derbys 20/3 – 23/3

4 years since we last managed a few days here – flat still v. well maintained super weather – had a nice meal at ‘M’ Indian Restaurant. Will try to visit again next year – still lots of walks we have not yet done.
Clive & Pauline Ollis Westbay, Bridport Dorset 25-28-3-03

Flat immaculate as always. First time we’ve had dry (but cold) weather. New Nature Reserve (so new the info office don’t know it) – Pannel Farm Reserve. From Icklesham (W. of Winchelsea) go south to Ashes Farm. Park by farm and take marked footpath E. Of farm, south across Pannel Sewer. L. for 100yds to hide. 2 other hides apparently not yet open to public. V.g bird watching – 52 species in one week.
Butcher in High Street excellent. Mermaid Inn – first visit – expensive but excellent for lunch (can’t afford dinner at £35) – worth it just once. Will return!
John & Olive Mercer (4th visit) Sidcup 2003-12-06 4 -11 April

Are we the only people from the West Mids to have discovered Rye? The Boathouse has been a most convenient place to stay. Highly recommended the Lemon Grass Thai restaurant and Simply Italian is good value.
Don’t try The Place (Camber) unless you like waiting a very long time for your food.
Look out for greedy duck who’ll try to join you for breakfast on the balcony. 2 ½ mile walk to Camber Castle was great.
Paula & Jack Cotteril Kingswinford, West Mids 26/7/03- 2/8/03

An idyllic week. Several interesting National Trust properties in the vicinity and had good visits to Great Dixter Garden and Dungeness Power Station & nearby RSPB Nature Reserve.
Rye audio trail from Tourist Info also good.
Jon & Ruth Robinson Goostrey ,Cheshire 20-27th September

Our first time in the Boathouse.
Very much enjoyed our few days (4).
So much to see and do around this area, would like to come back sometime.
If you ever go to Fairlight Country Park call in to the ‘Coastguards Tea Room’. Excellent service and a good menu.
Stella and Fred Clarke Beckenham Kent 30th Sep 03 to 4th Oct 03

THE KENT + EAST SUSSEX STEAM RAILWAY WAS FANTASTIC, A REAL STEP BACK IN TIME!! THE GHANDI INDIAN RESTAURANT IS LOVELY, AND ONE OF THE ONLY PLACES OPEN LATE TO EAT AT!!
GREAT LIVE MUSIC ON SUNDAY EVENING AT THE OLD BELL PUB. WE LOVED ALL THE ANTIQUE SHOPS, AND THOUGHT THAT THE PUB AT THE BACK OF “THE MERMAID” IN MERMAID STREET HAS THE BIGGEST FIREPLACE THAT WE’D EVER SEEN. GREAT FOR COLD NIGHTS!!
OH – AND YOU MUST TRY THE ‘CALZONE’ AT THE ITALIAN RESTAURANT, IT’S FAB!!
AFTER ALL OUR EXPEDITIONS, IT WAS NICE TO GET BACK TO A NICE WARM APARTMENT, COZ IT WAS PRETTY COLD & WINDY WHILE WE WERE IN RYE. HOPE TO RETURN!
Paul & Debbie O’Doherty (HARROW, MIDDLESEX) 20/10/02

Boathouse faultless again. Loads of great pubs (Union, Standard & Ypres) Great town. Back again next year. Cheers!
Sarah & Ian West Yoke Kent Nov 6 – 9

Lovely warm cosy flat with everything we needed.
Rye people very friendly. Landgate Bistro very good but book. For lovers of ‘Grand Designs’ on TV the ‘boys’ from the White House on the beach were dining there too! Great variety of birds on the Rye Harbour Nature Reserve incl. 4 Sandwich Terns.
Thanks Mrs B. for the welcome tray.

Our ‘Eleventh Hour’ booking was certainly inspired!
Fabulous weather everyday. Rye is a delight. Tenterden is also lovely particularly if you like to browse antiques. Comfortable apartment. Altogether a wonderful week.
Chris & Heather Hetherington Nottingham 4.8.07 - 11.8.07

As bird-watchers we found Rye Harbour & Dungeness Nature Reserves very interesting. Seeing the kingfisher on posts outside the flat was a bonus (every day!)

Peter & Myris Rose, Barnstaple Devon 28.vi.07

No emu! But cranes seen at Dungeness in Sept.
Kingfisher, barn owl, egrets, redshank, heron & all common birds all seen from window!
Good pub food “Queens Head”. Icklesham. (Chef cooks while you wait).
M & D. Whittle W/Sx 12.10-07

Back again. Yippee. We saw a seal in the river, outside flat, how great is that, nice one. Central heating works well, warm as toast. Supermarket opposite rail station..
Nice Madras at the ‘Gandhi’. Hastings great for Fishermen’s Museum & real working boats. Winchelsea town very pretty & Pett. Rye has its own charm that you can’t forget. Flat is home from home with better scenery. Wonderful
Bob & Jan S. Ockendon Essex 30 March – 6 April

Apartment excellent
Nice to watch the wildlife, enjoyable
Adrian & Louise Hopkins Ashby-de-la-Zouche Leicestershire 12/05/07

Thanks for the tea tray and introduction to the Inkerman Arms, Liz, the large cod was extra large. We have never spent such a relaxing holiday. The apartment was clean and comfortable. The birds were a joy, especially the oyster catchers. A pair of little egrets were frequent visitors as were a pair of shelducks. The Boathouse is a venue we would like to return to.
John & Kathy King Islington London 12-25/05/07

A big plus for our holiday was the location and cosiness of the Boathouse. Dungeness well worth a visit.
Quite surreal! Rye Heritage Centre worth visiting for history of Rye.
We enjoyed watching a pair of cormorants diving for fish and their antics. A very relaxing holiday. We’ll be back!
Sue & Dave Mossop Mansfield Nottinghamshire 16th – 23rd June 2007

Great week couldn’t believe the hot weather. Fairlight, Hastings Country Park worth a visit for views of Rye Bay & beyond. Lots of rabbits.
Rye as usual, really lovely. Medieval fair was enjoyable & informative. Chilled out at apartment watching river & boat traffic. Sid & Sophie Seagulls have kept us company all week, we will miss them.
Bob & Jan S. Ockendon Essex July – Aug 07

We arrived frazzled after the trials and tribulations of the ‘big smoke’ and were quickly mesmerised by the tranquillity of the Boathouse – it was all we thought it would be and more. We had sunshine every day and though there was lots of frost we were warm and cosy in the apartment! This was our 2nd visit to Rye, but our first to the Boathouse. But as Arnie said – “we’ll be back”.
A few suggestions –
Audio walking tour from the Tourist Office
Farmers’ market on Wednesday
Sunday lunch in the Union Inn (East Street) – don’t go there too late as the ‘roasts’ go quickly.
Inkerman Inn, Rye Harbour – great fish
The Woolpack
Thanks Chris, also Barbara and Dean.
Thelma and Bill N W London 10-17 November 07

Delightful flat – clean & comfortable – enjoyed: wandering in Rye, Mermaid Corner Tea Rooms, Ypres Tower – castle Museum, Rye Harbour nature Reserve, Winchelsea, Leeds Castle, AND ate at the Lemon Tree in Tenterden and The Gandhi Tandoori in Rye (recommend both)
Muriel & Felix Zwiebel, Minneapolis Minnesota, USA 17-21 November 2007

Thanks to Mrs B. for the spotless apartment as usual.
Very lucky with the weather- enjoyed Dungeness RSPB site and Rye Harbour Nature Reserve. Have also enjoyed bird-watching from the window – including 8 little egrets and every evening at twilight 2 barn owls hunting in the fields over the river. Also enjoyed eating out at the Ship (good value) Landgate Bistro (has à la carte + set menu Mon – Thurs – not as varied as it used to be) and Simply Italian. Will be back next year.
Andy & Lindy H. Enfield Middx 14-2-07 – 17-2-07

We’ve had a wonderful relaxing break here to celebrate a special anniversary. Nice lunch at the Flushing Inn – especially the puds! And fantastic mural in the dining room. Further afield we enjoyed wandering the streets of Hastings Old Town and recommend lunch at Latham’s Brasserie in George Street. Holiday over all too soon!
Brenda and Graham, Walthamstow 02/03 – 09/03/07

Apartment warm & cosy, nice and clean for our arrival. Some sunny days made sitting outside a real pleasure, with the compulsory glass of wine or two?
Simply Italian nice for food and not too far to walk. In all a very pleasant break. Howard + Pauline, Copthorne 23-3 to 30/3/07
Up to every standard we had hoped for- but didn’t necessarily think we’d get! Hope to see you again soon. Royal Oak Brookland a highly recommended watering hole but a short drive.
KEMBALL Daphne & Colin Guildford Surrey May 5th

Wonderful relaxing holiday watching the channel fill and empty. Boats floating past and Birds entertaining us. Oystercatcher (what noisy birds) Gulls (pair of Shelducks) Cormorants, a little Tern, & Red Shank. All seen from apartment which is very comfortable and well equipped
Rye is beautiful. Rye Harbour is a wonderful place especially the Nature Reserve. Cafe good value & good food. Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway good from Dungeness magical especially RSPB Reserve. Leeds Castle enchanting. Wish Rye wasn’t so far from home. Would definitely visit again.
Wonderful supermarket at Peasmarsh ‘ Jempsons’ We don’t eat out at all. We preferred to relax and enjoy view from window as we ate. We shall be sorry to leave The Boathouse has definitely put a spell on us.

Del Pozo Family SPAIN 17/7/07 – 23/7/07

Loved our stay, beautiful apartment. Thank you Chris for letting us stay and thankyou Lisa for the info you gave us. Even though we did not have our own transport we did go to some places, i.e. wild wood and farm world. Our favourite pub was Ypres Castle Inn nice food and service weather was gorgeous could not be better. THANKS AGAIN!!
Love Joe & Jess
Jess & Joe Berwick + East Grinstead 28/7/07 – 4/7/07

We've really enjoyed this holiday. To see a river instead of a road, a boat instead of a car is one of the best things about it. We watched a heron on the far bank last night and a fox on this side tonight. Rye is lovely, plenty of choice for eating out. The old streets and houses take you back in time. The accommodation is first class, very clean and comfortable.
Clare & Geoff Shilton 16-30 AUG 1997

The Boathouse – what a find! A very relaxing week.
Ideal spot to undertake some undisturbed painting and writing. Rye is great, so full of history and all within easy reach on foot.
Geoff & Jen 5 Aug 06 – 12 Aug 06

Another relaxing visit. Wonders of our trip; Snow, Snow & more snow!! & Barn Owl!!
Egrets, Heron, Hundreds of Lapwings, all from the window.
Maureen & David Whittle W/Sx 4 – 3 – 05

Hit the jackpot for weather, nearly 100% sunshine all week. Apartment comfy & clean & no problems. Balcony a great asset in this lovely weather.
Do hire the headphones from the Tourist office on the Strand, it makes a walk around Rye very interesting. Rye Harbour good for watching boats come in & out when the tide is in (it mostly seems to be out!!) Copper Kettle not good value unless you like oysters. Lovely fish from shop by bridge past bowling greens.
Really relaxing & enjoyable holiday.
Adrian & Janet Madin Shrewsbury 12-19 June ‘99

Never been here before but it’s different – in a nice way. Dungeness is so weird … like a film set with the ramshackle huts, bleak space & The Smokey (fish).
Simply Italian food & atmosphere great (v. busy on Saturday but can see why it is!) Ghandi Indian OK. Didn’t meet the legendary Mrs B … obviously a very nice lady?!
Alexandra & Tim Weybridge Surrey 27-30 JAN 2006

Glorious weather, comfortable accommodation – overall an excellent week. Don’t leave Rye without visiting the Rye Treasury of Mechanical Music, church tower is worth a visit for the view. The Story of Rye in the Heritage Centre also very good. The Union Inn East St has a varied menu at reasonable prices and good sized portions. If you enjoy watching birds Pett Level has been very good this week.
Joyce & Brian Stannard Ipswich, Suffolk 4/9/99 – 11/9/99

A short but very sweet visit. Very comfortable as always. The Boathouse is a perfect place to escape to time and time again.
Miss T Green 04/10/05

Enjoyed our stay very much – apartment suited us perfectly. We recommend the Fish Café Tower Street & The Place at Camber and the Kettle o Fish for good traditional fish and chips. The Farmers Market 10am on Weds had excellent olives, breads & croissants etc.
Jim & Yvonne McGinley 19/8/06 - 26/8/06

A peaceful relaxing week, We went to see the Lamb House, Great Dixter, Camber Sands and Hastings etc..
Enjoyed the food; excellent fish from the fishmonger east of here along the footpath, superb pies and pasties from Rye Delicatessen, apples from the farmers market. The Gandhi is very good value but beware of the hotter dishes which are very hot indeed!
Roy & Shinko 2/9/06 - 9/9/06

A very relaxing week. We found the local transport facilities very good and the narrow gauge railway between Hythe and Dungeness an absolute must. The whole area is a delight.
John and Cecilia from YORK 160906

As frequent visitors to Rye having this comfortable and quiet base for a few days is a treat. Recommend Italian on the quay, Cranberries (High St) for teas piece of cake, The Place in Camber is worth a trip. Landgate Bistro recommended only open Tues> Sat. We’ll be back, Rye is a little gem!
Marina & Eamann Ireland 7/10 – 10/10/06

Recommend
- Canterbury via Park & Ride (£2 per car/bus free)

Lynne & Steve 18-21 April ‘06

Flat very warm, cosy and comfy.
Rye delightful & good bird-watching from Rye Harbour & Winchelsea Beach. A relaxing holiday with fine blend of heritage and nature. We enjoyed the peace and tranquillity so much that this is the only time we have ever wanted to return to a holiday destination!!
David & Ann Scrivens (Hertfordshire) 5-11-99

Thanks to Mrs B... for the tea tray. A restful stay with some glorious weather. Birdwatching at Dungeness & Rye Harbour + a tawny owl and little egret from the window! Ate out at Landgate Bistro, Monastery & Munrows – all excellent (but not cheap - £16-£19 menus)
Andy & Lindy H Enfield Middx 26-2-2000

Another good rest from the rat race.
We have seen 23 species of birds from this window and enjoyed Rye Harbour & Dungeness. Lovely tea & cakes in Cobblers.
Hope to come again!! Rye Treasury good value when too wet for walking we really enjoyed it!!
David & Maureen Whittle Sussex 14-21st April

We enjoyed a good rummage in Hastings’ antique bookshops – and bought a super chest of drawers! We visited Bodiam, enjoyed a trip across the channel and Winchelsea but most of all we loved Rye. An exceptional holiday flat. Thank you
David & Anne Slaughter Winchester 30th Sept – 7th OCT

If you’re into architecture
Rye of course & also (a fair distance!) Faversham – with its splendid church – explore well.
Birdlife Rye Harbour Hides
Food Not sure about those in Rye due to budget – but if you enjoy really fresh fish & chips – try the Mermaid at Old Town front Hastings.
Beer Adnams Broadside at the Ypres here in Rye
Finally – you don’t need to be religious to enjoy evensong (5.30 weekdays) at Canterbury Cathedral – just listen to those voices and enjoy total serenity!
Del & June Ivory N.Devon 13th Oct’00

SUPER VISIT. ONLY *GREENSHANKS & CORMORANTS (+ DUCKS!) VISIBLE FROM THE WINDOW.
GOOD FOOD AT LANDGATE BISTRO (X2) & THE PLACE AT CAMBER (x1)
*Senior moment. Really redshanks! 
PETER & GAY COOPER, DULWICH, LONDON 15-3-05/18-3-05

Nice to be back. Nice venue.
All that we remember and more. The orange sun between the boat hulls on the horizon with a gentle morning mist was inspirational!!!
Linda & Len Spiller, Bromley, Kent 18/3/05 – 21/3/05

Super flat, very well presented and felt at home straight away. Highly recommend the ’Simply Italian’ restaurant and the Ship Hotel pub, very warm welcome from Pat B. on arrival,
The Rye town model well worth a look and helped us to get our bearings in the town. All the shop people very friendly.
We certainly hope to come back! Loved it!
Rich & Val from Worthing 12/4/05-15/4/05

We had a very good stay, we liked the Boathouse very much. Nice weather all week. Walk to Winchelsea is beautiful, visit to Great Dixter garden (in Northiam) very nice too.
Rye is a great place to stay.
Maryke Hessing & Lenie den Heyer, Holland 15/04/04 – 22/04/05

We have enjoyed our week here.
East Sussex + Kent very pretty. Visits to Seven Sisters, Beachy Head, White Cliffs of Dover, Hastings Country Park esp. lovely but many other places of interest. The flat comfy. From the flat 25 species of bird seen + one heard (cuckoo). Of special interest barn owl + little + common terns,
Thankyou Rye, very quaint.
Celia & David Bailey, Macclesfield Cheshire. 14-21 May’05

Loved the apartment – very cosy. Lots of good walks – flat & easy. Visits to Hastings, Beachy Head and Eastbourne, Canterbury very interesting – only 1 hour’s drive, - not enough time to see everywhere. Let’s hope we can return. Loved the river and the birds!
Thank you Mrs B for the immaculate condition of our home for one week!
JOAN + JOHN STUBBS, BARNSLEY S.YORKS. 21st -28th May ‘05

Lovely apartment + to be able to wash clothes + cook own food when travelling was great. Rye is great + thoroughly enjoyed Canterbury Cathedral. Will recommend to others from Oz.
Kathy & Tim Steadman, Melbourne Australia 7.5.05

We were both in need of a break and we could not have picked a nicer town in Rye. After the pace of London we found a little piece of England that is still England.
Mrs B could not have been more helpful in replacing the C/D player for us, it’s the kindness that makes all the difference. The apartment was clean & very peaceful just suited us fine.
Rye has so much to discover. We suggest you just explore & enjoy.
Rosalinda & Colin, Barnet Herts 10th to 24 Sept

Enjoyed our stay in peaceful surroundings,
Lovely watching the tide boats and various birds.
Very clean, cosy flat and welcome from Mrs B.
Visited Rye many years ago and still enjoyed its history and quaintness.
First few days the weather was beautiful, next few days very good for Oct.
A really enjoyable week.

Andy + Jules, Uxbridge 8-10/4/05

Having driven down the M20 en route to Francec many times we decided for once to turn right towards this area – we were not disappointed. An excellent week, glorious weather, comfortable & clean apartment.
Lots to do & see. PS. We did go to France for the day via the tunnel – so easy.
Bill & Di Barltrop, Stamford Lincs, 16 -23/4/05

Apartment – clean , cosy, comfy & calming! Interesting area.
Recommend train Tenterden to Bodiam. We enjoyed, also, Great Dixter and Merriment Gardens. The rabbits burrowing in the bank opposite were compensation for not seeing a single boat go by!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
MARGARET & DAVID LUNNON, COULSDON, SURREY 14.05.05

Apartment warm cosy has everything we needed for our stay. We have seen five boats go by. Plenty of wildlife and the view is fine.
Rye itself is a friendly place. The Ship has great grub.
Dover Castle is a must. So is Tunbridge Wells. Go to Deal rather than Hastings. We’ve had good weather for most of week, Friday was wet! We had a really relaxing time.
The bed is great (Noisy boiler)
Thanks will Recommend to others. Pam Green
*NB Look out for Cormorant fishing then drying himself on top of Signal Pole
Pam and Dave, Tamworth, Staffs 21-05-05

Extreme enjoyment – Peace amidst the constant changes of Tide, Wildlife (and weather). Very soothing experience – Recommended
John & Wendy, Melbourne (Australia) 09-06-05

I arrived stressed, frazzled and exhausted and shall be leaving relaxed, restored and reinvigorated (and that despite going to work in London 3 days this week). Rye and the Boathouse have woven their usual spell: both the town & Winchelsea have positively glowed in the sun. Mahdi Spice, Simply Italian both good. Flushing Inn up to its usual standard. Thanks to Mrs B.
CLARE CANTON, (GREENWICH) 24/6/05

Our first visit and completely the short but valuable and most welcome escape for a few days – a perfect bolthole. We can confirm the Simply Italian and Mahdi Spice recommendations which did not disappoint, but “Rye Delicatessen” is a place so wonderfully tempting, it’s almost dangerous to go inside ….
Tony and Anne Careless, Isle of Wight 25th Oct ‘05

Back again, this time for winter break. Just walking and eating and watching the tide. Bliss. Can recommend Rye Bonfire & fireworks
best we have been to.
Rob & Helen, Petersfield 11th Nov 18th Nov 05

Lovely place
Just the right setting with a light dusting of snow. Dungeness out of this world.
Hastings Country Park enchanting.
Susanna and Wilma, Bath, Somerset 19 Feb – 26 Feb 2005

Had a very relaxing and enjoyable Valentine’s weekend.
The apartment is very clean & comfortable. Will recommend this to others.
A day in Hastings meant I could share my childhood memories with my boyfriend.
Had a great time and don’t want to go back home to London.
Chelsea & John London 13-2-99 - 16-2-99

Comfortable clean apartment, comfy bed and perfect setting.
Had a super week, weather lovely. Nice to wake to the sound of birds instead of alarm clocks. Rye is a gem to explore. Rye Nature Reserve, Camber Sands & Christopher Lloyds House & Garden at Gt. Dixter (9 miles) a must. Reasonably priced good meals at the Union Inn, also Roast Salt Marsh Lamb at the George Inn very tasty. Barn owl quartering the Marsh opposite most late evenings. Many thanks enjoyed the stay.
Ann & Bob May, Felixstowe Suffolk July 9th – July 16th 2005

Another relaxing holiday ambling around Rye and loving it. This is such a good habit. Thanks
Judith & Clive Morgan, Buckfast, Devon (Third visit) 26th March - 2nd April

Enjoyed our second visit to the Boathouse. Superb weather every day. As photographers we spent a lot of time at Dungeness. See Chris Stone’s Gallery there for local pictures. Not much bird life yet but some gravel pits getting some visitors. Good food from Simply Italian. River Café – good food but service a bit slow mid week.
ALAN & SHEILA BORTHWICK, PERTH, SCOTLAND 17 – 24 SEPT 05

Back here at the (BOATHOUSE) for the 2nd year running, on our 6th or 7th visit to Rye.
Enjoyed Rye all over again, as we usually do & the apartment is ideal accommodation & so clean.
We have visited Battle, Winchelsea & Rye Harbour, plus some local walks.
All very enjoyable.
Mr & Mrs Mitchard, Strood, Rochester, Kent May 30th to June 6th

Rye is the kind of place we did hope to find. We took the train to Hastings and walked the 12 miles back to Rye (See “Timeout – Country Walks” Vol.2.). GREAT!
Apartment 10 out of 10. English beer is too warm. Do you put it in microwave before drinking? Too many kids in Chelsea shirts these days. Anyway – Great holidays …
Guido Kirfel Claudia Daugl Cologne Trier Germany August 19th – 26th 2006

Enjoyed our first visit to Rye. The Town and pubs were great. Lovely and relaxing holiday the weather was good plenty of sunshine.
Apartment is cosy and very comfortable and the surrounds very peaceful. Nice to sit and watch the boats on the river. Hope to be back soon.
VAL & ALAN HUGHES HUTTON ESSEX 8/8/98

Yet another visit to the Boathouse. A nice warm welcome from the housekeeper when we arrived! Rye really is our second home, lots of lovely pubs/tea rooms around Rye. Can recommend the 'Woolpack Inn' for a great 'Pub Meal' a couple of miles east of Rye. Will return! AGAIN!
Clare & Ian, Eastbourne 25/31-10-98

Well, we survived the Sunday night hurricane & have watched the field on the opposite bank become flooded!! However, we have been very cosy in this comfortable apartment & it wasn’t all rain. Recommend a bracing walk around Rye Harbour Nature Reserve or Dungeness. We were also fortunate to watch the Kingfisher ‘lunch’ on the opposite bank near the weir most days. Winchelsea & Tea Tree Tea rooms recommended!
This was the week that the rivers overflowed over most of England – worst floods for 50 years, perhaps 100 years in some places.
Joan & Eric Sortwell 28 Oct – 4 NOV

Our first visit.
A very comfortable apartment, everything we needed without being cluttered. Seven days of sunshine, what more could we ask. We loved the town of Rye, it was like going back in time.
Joyce & David Fulker Bracknell Berks 25.5.01

This was a last minute holiday to Rye. Being close to our home we have visited Rye many times for a day but a week here has allowed us to explore all the nooks & crannies.
Fantastic weather allowed us to sit on the balcony over breakfast, read a book & relax. Enjoyed Batemans at Burwash, the promenade at Bexhill and the Rye harbour nature reserve (Park in the large car park on the right at Rye Harbour then walk down to Lime Kiln cottage RSPB for info.

Travellers Tips
Rye
- Copper Kettle Restaurant. Halibut lovely. Sea Bass not so fresh
- Walkers Cocktail bar on the Strand. Happy hour on cocktails great value for money. Try the Rocket Launcher – lethal!
Hastings
- Good old fashioned sea side town. Great for kids – big & small.
- Smugglers Cavern not worth the entrance fee
- Hastings Castle – Good for a wander & views
- Cliff railways – keep ticket for return journey. We lost ours!
Dover
- Don’t take the Guide Friday tour – not worth the money – not much to see in Dover
- Dover Castle – hours of fun!
Canterbury
- Take boat trip at Weavers Inn Restaurant. FANTASTIC!
- Canterbury Tales – very good & very smelly!!!
Bodiam Castle
- Wonderfully romantic if it weren’t for the many screaming over excited children
- Great picnic area
- Don’t forget your camera
Winchelsea Beach
- Do not park in the pay & display car park. FREE parking spaces further along the road.
Calais, France
- Forget Auchan, go straight for Carrefour @ Cité Europe
David & Madison, WGC, Herts 25/8/01 – 3/9/01

Flat really warm & comfortable.
Italian restaurant on corner Brilliant!!
Very eventful day trip to Paris
Weather good too!
K Reedman & T Harris Basingstoke 15.10.01

Weather very hot – we have been so lucky!!! Flat perfect – location superb, lovely to walk into Rye for a morning coffee & peruse of newspapers … Really relaxing! Real “fish & chips” from the shop on the Strand Quay very good indeed. This has been our first visit, but certainly not our last, looking forward to coming again soon. P.S. The walks from the Rye Harbour nature reserve are excellent, well worth the blisters …. After a 5 mile walk!!
Lyn & Dan Lichfield, Staffs 17.08.02

WHAT A WONDERFUL PLACE, WARM WELCOME FROM PAT & LISA
CLEAN APARTMENT WITH ALL YOU NEED, LOVED WATCHING THE RIVER AND WILDLIFE, MADE A CHANGE FROM HUMAN WILDLIFE BACK HOME? THIS IS THE CHILL OUT ZONE, QUIET & PEACEFUL. IF WE HAD KNOWN HOW NICE IT IS HERE WE WOULD HAVE BOOKED A LONGER STAY. RYE IS TRANQUIL WITH ITS HISTORIC SURROUNDINGS & LITTLE BACK STREETS. HAD A NICE HOME COOKED MEAL AT THE “SEAGULL” HASTINGS.
DON’T WANT TO GO HOME & WILL CERTAINLY BOOK UP AGAIN, AND MAYBE TRY & GET HERE IN THE COLDER MONTHS, WHEN IT WILL TAKE ON A DIFFERENT KIND OF CHARM. JUST LOOKING OUT OF THE WINDOW DOES IT FOR ME & MY WIFE.
THANK YOU.
BOB & JAN SOUTH OCKENDON ESSEX JULY 06 22-24

Rye was quiet as expected for time of year. Monastery restaurant, (very top of town) set menu good value.
10 mike walk out to Rye Harbour, along the beach (road) past the old lifeboat stn, back past Camber Castle.
Also Hastings Country Park Sw 86/11 on Big Wall Map. Walks for all!! Very scenic.
Ross & Michelle Waitt Sittingbourne Kent 11/02/02

Yet again we have had the perfect break – if only too short. Woke up this morning to a perfect blue sky and the sound of the river. Peace! So little traffic. The evening was full of stars and very little light pollution – such a change from the city.
Meal at the ‘Flushing Inn’ in town was wonderful. Excellent service, beautiful food and very relaxed. Watch out for more pretentious customers!
As always, the Boathouse was spotless – thanks to Mrs B.. Complete Heaven!
Annie 14/02/02

A really good holiday – lots to see.
Charleston (Firle nr Lewes) “Bloomsbury Group” – well worth a visit. Ship Inn has food on Sunday evenings.
Roger & Pat Savage Riverhead Kent 22-29 Sept

Our 3rd visit. Beautifully clean & comfortable accommodation and everything that you need.
Sociable evening at Ypres Inn with good food. Our usual Sunday lunch fish and chips at Inkerman Arms at Rye Harbour – not to be missed.
We’ll be back to beautiful Rye.
Lynne & Derek Martin Ashford. Middx. 15-18.3.02

Our 2nd visit to the Boathouse. Another relaxing break in this warm & comfortable holiday home.
Spent a day in France & the rest of the week around Rye. Weather perfect!! We will be back again with our bikes in tow!!!
Thanks Mrs B. for your hospitality!!!
Jacqui & Royce Drew West Hallam, Derbyshire 22-29.3.03

The apartment exceeded our expectations, as did Rye.
Unfortunately the weather was poor which kept us from the beach rather more than we would have liked.
However, the upside was that we explored other places such as Battle – lovely, Hastings – disappointing and Tunbridge Wells – very pleasant place to shop. Overall a most enjoyable holiday and thanks to Mrs B. for a warm welcome.
By the way ….. Great Bed !!
Sarah and Mark Leicester 6.7.02

Our second visit to the Boathouse, what joy, so peaceful. Great excitement on Monday when the river flooded & the ‘Excelsior’ a sailing trawler took to sea.
Lovely nature walk to Camber Castle. Plenty of quality places to eat but the ‘Flushing Inn’ was very special.
Liz & Richard Cambridge 14-09-02

This is our eighth visit to the Boathouse – unbeatable for peace and tranquillity, great walks (see wall map), good restaurants and bars, fresh sea and country air.
Charming old town with much of interest.
Do visit exquisite, little Catholic Church in Watchbell Street.
John and Carole Owen Sittingbourne Kent 28/8/04 – 4/9/04

A truly relaxing & peaceful bolthole away from the madding crowd. Apartment clean warm & welcoming. Rye is a wonderful tranquil place to come, ideal to chill out & prepare for Christmas rush! Very highly recommended.
Kate & Jeremy Nears Suffolk 6/12/04

Had a lovely two weeks, the weather has been perfect, and the apartment great. Peaceful yet close to all the pubs and restaurants in Rye. Hope to be back next year.
KEVIN & MARIA FROM HOLLAND 16th JULY TO 30TH JULY 94

We’ve had a wonderful time here. Very peaceful. Flat is very cosy and well equipped. The Mermaid Inn is excellent for a very friendly barman (Terry) and great locals full of good yarns. Town markets on a Thursday are a must for really cheap bargains or just about anything. Ask anyone at the Mermaid about the ghosts in Room 16!! We’ll be back for sure!
Caryn & John Cooper Sydney Australia 22-2-97 to 8.3.97

Day 1. V. Clean, firstly – Bed is beautiful - will kill us to go back to 2ft wide bed in UNL halls of residence. Bath lovely – although wonderfully spacious, lacks legroom for two.
Ref. Jill and John from London, and others – what on earth is wrong with the Ship? Do not suffer due to lack of torch, cheese grater or microwave.
Again, bed is lovely, although bedroom generally suffers from inclusion of dubious picture above bedhead, visible in wardrobe mirror. Jen x
DAY 3. THE BED’S LOVELY, HENCE NO DAY 2!
SHOWER IS VAST IMPROVEMENT ON BATH.
UNION INN INBREDS HOME FROM HOME MUCH LIKE A NIGHT DOWN THE LEGION.
FLETCHERS HOUSE CAFÉ HAUNTED BY SIXTEENTH CENTURY GHOST AND OSCAR WINNING LANDLADY
EXTRAORDINARY IRONMONGERS. STILL NO NEED OF TORCH OR CHEESE GRATER, ALTHOUGH KEN HOM & HIS MAGICAL WOK WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
STANDARD INN A MUST FOR ALL TOM PETTY FANS – ROB
Day Six. Whole flat is lovely. Two days in Brighton made an interesting break. Do not want to leave but will not return for about 4 years until both are on a full wage. Has been a quiet if not restful week.
Jen and Rob Chesham, Bucks. 28th Dec 1997

Icklesham. A superb vegan meal was prepared for me @ an hours notice. Lovely pub, real ale. Large portion meals. V.impressed. Would also recommend visiting Derek Jarman’s Cottage @ Dungeness if you’re a fan. V. moving. Take away Indian @ Tiger Coast on Landgate/High Street ready to collect within 20 mins of ordering and was delicious. Winchelsea Beach v. peaceful but all pebbles so makes for uncomfortable sunbathing – take lots of padding!! Simply Italian v. good. Excellent food and service. Staff v. helpful & friendly. Finally thanks to Pat for such a warm welcome + cuppa ready to be made. Also good to meet Chris . Will be recommending Rye + the Boathouse to relatives, family + hope to return myself @ same stage.
One criticism – lock on door can be temperamental - & thought I was locked out a couple of times! No problems at all other than this.
Becky Wright Catton Norwich, Norfolk 28.07.01- 04.08.01

First class apartment. Situation perfect. Weather has been very kind to us. Thanks to Pat for friendly welcome, tea was needed after long drive. Now, out of season, the town is quiet … custom is slow so you are very welcome almost wherever you go.
The Cockhorse Peasmarsh good value – mixed grill and Japanese prawns excellent.
Crown and Pipemakers “Duty Free” – lively
Mermaid quiet and refined. Cinque Ports better inside than it looks out. Forge bitter in the Standard – worth a try.
Think we’ll be back … its like a magnet.
Ian & Celia Marus Bridge, Wigan. 1st – 8th Sept. 01

We had a very enjoyable time just reading the comments in this visitor’s book!
Rye is a great place – we will probably come back.
Paul & Janet Chandler Watford Herts July 5 August 2006

Where have all the birds gone?
Gone away every one!
Not completely true, some seagulls one or two
Listening to the advice of Mr Melville-Brown
Did not feed the birds so as not to make him frown!
To stay here has been wonderful so warm & clean
Thanks to Mrs B. the cleaning QUEEN!!
So thanks for all your thoughtfulness
This accommodation is the BEST

Do, do go & have a coffee & genuine home made cakes & scones at Cheyne House, High St. Rye.
Run by mother, daughter & son-in-law.
Ted & Ginny Henfield, Sx 2nd – 6th October

A very peaceful & relaxing stay. V. much needed! Excellent accommodation. Rye lovely. Would highly recommend The Queen’s Head @
Wonderful view, glorious weather – sat outside for breakfast with the sun on our faces most days. We cycled to Winchelsea one day & from Appledore on a circuit route via Ivychurch. Stopped at the Woolpack a really old, friendly & atmospheric pub.
Views, peace & rest – a truly brilliant few days holiday for us both – now back to reality!!!!
Shelagh & Steve Howe, East Sussex 13th – 17th February 1998

Be very aware that when sitting on balcony drinking vino, if apartment door closes, you are locked out. (very very sorry Mrs B... & peeps at end of block.) We have had a lovely stay here. Rye has lived up to its description of our good friends Johnny & Bob the Builder (Mr.Mrs Guard thanks for the recommendation). Apartment lovely and clean, perfectly situated. Try to visit Camber Sands beach, its one of the best beaches we have been on. Fish shop in town main St, is v. good, nice mushy peas. Ypres Inn customers very yang. Hope & Anchor nice pub.
Jack & Kev Bellchambers, Pooks Green, Southampton 25th Aug - 29th Aug 2001

Peaceful birthday break in the middle of an infant school Christmas! We go home with batteries recharged & fit for Christmas! Previous comments on Cranberries revised, since falling into new hands! The town is very festive & musical – Salvation Army Band, an accordion player & an itinerant lute player, complete with costume!!! The lights look lovely. 
Martin & Jo Itter Horndon on the Hill, Essex 14/16 Dec 2001

Very short stay lovely warm comfortable clean, not a care! Very enjoyable break – lots of birds seen ! cuckoos (3) stone chat swallows heron (2) sea gull chicks (very young!)
Indian restaurant Mandhi Spice) was very good! Would come again as so much to occupy us! Or just be lazy.
Chris & Bill Cranleigh, Surrey 8th-11th June 2002

Enjoyed a relaxing week watching the boats go by! Leeds Castle worth the trip & ideally situated for a day trip to France. Excellent weather & Italian restaurant was good. Clean & pleasant apartment which is ideally situated for Rye and the surrounding area. Hope to come again.
Derek & Joyce Flounders Hartlepool 17-24th August 2002

Very impressed with the apartment, very clean and comfortable. Have very much enjoyed our wonderfully relaxing long weekend. There is plenty to do in and around Rye, especially if you are an EF Benson fan. Ham baguettes at the Ypres inn are memorable!
Nice touches in the apartment are: tea bags and fresh milk from Mrs B., very thoughtful after a long journey and an extension lead for the hairdryer – I’ve been so many places where the hairdryer doesn’t reach to the mirror. Also, the bed – what luxury to have a 5ft. bed on holiday!
Diane and Darren Cheltenham, Glos 11-14 Oct 2002

It may have only been a weekend but we feel we’ve had a week of benefit – many thanks.
Alan & Stephanie Lindfield, West Sussex 29 Nov to 1 Dec

A Bank Holiday week and the weather was glorious
…….. definitely an oxymoron
Tips for those that follow :-
1. Spend time exploring the streets of Rye before 10:00am and after 6:00pm (the day trippers are not around and you have the place to enjoy virtually to yourself)
2. If you need to collect email you can have one hours internet access for free in the local library on Lion Street. Phone to book a time slot
3. Best paintings of the area are by local artist Peter Jay (available at 102 High St) I’m taking a small one home with me and am in good company (Sir Paul McCartney bought one last week)
4. David Sharp Pottery very obliging. Will customise their wares and post them to you
Ann Lane Fareham, Hants 24th May to 31st May 2003

Our first visit to Sussex. Very good location & accommodation.
Weather dry but v. windy, 2 dull days. Spent a lot of time at Dungeness – we are keen photographers and it is a really good area. Of interest was grounded ship at Camber Sands!
Italian restaurant very good, as was Fish & Chip shop along the Mint. Winchelsea Beach & Rye Harbour both worth a visit.
Alan & Sheila Borthwick Perth., Scotland 18th – 25th Sept

Very pleasant stay. Can’t add any more to essays in book – we’ll be back.
David and Sally Bath, Somerset 17th April 2004

Great visit – fantastic weather
Can heartily recommend ‘Jacques’ for any one who makes it to Canterbury.
Use the binoculars for great views of France from top of old Lighthouse in Dungeness.
John & Michael London E1 29/3/04

Gorgeously clean and cosy flat – will definitely return
Arrived on a Tuesday: warning to all visitors, Rye is closed on a Tuesday so play Patience, walk the beach or read a book, but do not expect so much as a mouse’s fart in Rye! Here are a couple of notes having read previous entries :
Cranberries – gorgeous tea room, do go!
Ypres Castle Inn – reasonable food though no range and not hearty portions!
Mermaid Inn (Rye) – ended every evening with a drink in front of their wonderful log fire
Good beaches – Camber Sands & Winchelsea
Battle – pleasant town to visit
Kathy Cox & Will Taylor Midlands 30th Nov – 3rd Dec 2004

Flat as warm, cosy & clean as ever.
The river still works its magic on stressed minds, more hypnotic than ever. Nowhere like Rye at Christmas! Hope to be back in the future. 
PS. Like the new painting in the bedroom very much
Martin & Jo Itter Horndon on the Hill, Essex 17th/20th December

Loved the apartment. Very lucky with the weather. Port Lympne Animal Park well worth a visit. Also the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway but thought food in pubs and restaurants rather overpriced. Good fish and chips at Inkerman arms, Rye Harbour.
Val & Jack Robins Stubbington Hants April 2001

Much enjoyed returning to Rye after very many years and to be warmly greeted by Pat B. Accommodation very comfortable clean and well equipped in a quiet and attractive setting. Rye has changed but Rye is still Rye, Excellent meal at the Queens Head, Landgate
Phil & Barbera Simpson Maldon Essex 8.03.02

Apartment very comfortable & clean – thank you Mrs B.!
Audio walk around Rye very informative. Food at Italian OK – best to book a table at the weekend – not a quiet restful place but entertaining in its own way. Walkers do a good ‘Tapas’ – more like Antipasto
Ypres Pub good for food too. Local fish excellent.
If you go to Canterbury try a River Boat ride – very peaceful.
Anne & David Couchman 30.3 – 6.4

A CLEAN & PLEASANT APARTMENT
FLAT PERFECT FOR OUR NEEDS OF GETTING TO KNOW THE AREA WHICH IS CERTAINLY FULL OF INTEREST PLUS WE STRUCK VERY LUCKY WITH THE WEATHER – THE SUN SHONE EVERY DAY.
SO MUCH TO SEE & DO ‘RYE’ IS A GEM. TRY THOSE ANCIENT BACK STREETS NEAR THE CHURCH. DO HAVE A TRIP ON THE MINIATURE KENT & EAST SUSSEX STEAM RAILWAY AND SEE THE VARIOUS CASTLES, MANOR HOUSES & COUNTRYSIDE.
MR & MRS N DEE WEEK ENDING 10 MAY

Clean comfortable flat, Rye lovely old quaint place. Never seen beaches with cabbages growing on them before, amongst the stones & other plants, at Rye Harbour Nature Reserve & Pett near Winchelsea.
Lovely views from Stony Beach to the cliff also a sm. Castle nestled amongst the trees.
Our first visit to Rye, pleasantly surprised!
June & John Hannington 28th June – 5 July

Ideal quiet situation with an easy walk into town. Food at Ypres Inn poor and overpriced. Indian Food at Ghandi superb as also is the Fish & Chips from the place in the Mint. Battle of Britain Museum at Hawkinge excellent and the Memorial is close by too (only 3 miles from museum).
Re-visited childhood due to exhibition at Rye Art Gallery (Capt. Pugwash). Free internet access at Rye library is very handy as can leave laptop at home.
Ann & John Lane Fareham, Hants + Cannock, Staffs 20-9-03 - 27-9-03

Flat very warm & comfortable as we managed to choose the one week of winter for our holiday. If your clients think the food in Rye expensive coming from Scilly we do not agree. All the meals we had were excellent!
People of Rye very friendly. Thanks Mrs B.
GILLIAN & GERARD LANGDON ATLANTA BRYHER, ISLES OF SCILLY 5.3.04

Clean + warm flat, very welcoming on return after the gales at the beginning of our stay. Had some sun too and enjoyed walks to Winchelsea and around the RSPB reserve at Dungeness. Food in Rye O.K. ‘Lemon Grass’ Thai restaurant very good.
Gill + Mike, Nottingham 25.03.04

A very comfortable stay with friendly locals and neighbours. First visit to Rye and found it wonderful. The weather has been clear/blue/hot. The walk to Dixter via County Boundary trail was beautiful with lots of real woodland. Coast and castles very striking. We hope to be back. Thanks
Richard & Ilona Warham Settle Nth Yks 13/04/04- 17/04/04

Peace and quiet, with a luxury apartment. Thanks for a very comfortable holiday.
We can recommend a visit to the house and Gardens at Great Dixter. The mechanical Music Museum in Cinque Ports Street is fascinating. The Forge Restaurant just around the corner does very good steaks and local fish dishes. I had cucumber soup from cucumbers grown in the chefs own garden!
Phil & Edwina Farlow New Malden, Surrey 17-24 July 99

First visit to Rye enjoyed our stay, comfortable flat, weather good, found food at Art & Coffee shop good also newly opened Fish Café and Bistro. Hope to return some time in the future.

Maureen & David Whittle Hurstpierpoint Sx 4-10 Oct 03

A beautiful, relaxing week. Loads to see and do locally. Lovely walks across the marshes and plenty of birds to see. Hobbies common at the moment – one perched on the telegraph pole opposite – and a good variety of waders. Recommended outings : Battle & Pevensey, Lewes (don’t miss Middle Farm for cider etc.). Dungeness, Camber Sands for the sea-bathing. PJM.
John & Sheila McLaughlin Writtle, Essex 21-28/8/99

We were looking for peace and quiet after a hectic year - and we found it here. It is particularly pleasant in the morning when the sun is shining and the tide is high. Take advantage of the recommended walks (see box on wall)....Don’t burn the toast because it will set off the smoke alarm! If a light bulb blows none of the other lights will work. However, this can be remedied by the switch in the box on the back wall of the bedroom.
Enjoy!
John & Carole Owen, Sittingbourne, Kent 11/5/96 – 18/5/96

A relaxing week, with it absence of kids, dogs & traffic – just the view, the birds, the boats and the bunnies – a holiday in itself!
Our week coincided with the medieval weekend and the solar eclipse – the latter was witnessed at Camber Sands – very impressive.
- We visited some places on hired bikes (available from “Rye Hire” Cyprus Place)
Go on the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway – good fun for young children and old children.
Beachy Head, Dungeness, Winchelsea & Eastbourne well worth visiting but very few places equal Rye!
Graham & Rosemary Hall Pontefract. West Yorks Aug 7th – 14th Aug 99

Another relaxing stay in Rye, at No. 11 this time. Birdwatching at Dungeness & Rye Harbour Reserves. Good food at Munrows & the Monastery (both set menus at reasonable prices – not cheap, but good value) also an interesting menu at Landgate Bistro. Enjoyed visiting the galleries in Rye.
Good comfortable accommodation as usual, Thank you
* Also – really enjoyed a few hours at the Mechanical Music Museum in Rye – Really good for rainy weather.
Andy & Lindy H Enfield, Middx 20-2-99

Lovely stay – outlook from flat tranquil and v. relaxing. Perfect bolthole for exploring The area. A visit to Dungeness Bird Reserve a must. Tunbridge Wells a good day out. Too many places to visit in a week!
NT properties in easy driving distances. Recommend the Monastery restaurant in High Street, Rye. Good food and service friendly.
Howard & Jackie Mansell Woking, Surrey 12-19 Aug 2000

Our second visit and as good as we remember. After a hectic few months the perfect respite and haven’t missed the phone at all (well not much) Mrs B... provided excellent welcome & service. Good cream tea at quaint Cobbles off the Mint. Dinner at the Old Forge excellent, if a bit pricey if on a budget. Excellent fish and chips at Inkerman Arms at Rye Harbour. We look forward to our next visit with pleasure.
Lynne + Derek Martin Ashford Middlesex 16/3/01 – 19/3/01

Delighted with the apartment. Very peaceful and comfortable. Enjoyed wandering around Rye & looking at antique shops. Had a great meal in ‘Simply Italian’ – very buzzing. Dover Castle very interesting day trip. Didn’t see the kingfisher but saw the ‘little Egret’ twice (white heron!).
Chris & June Locke Ipswich, Suffolk 15.11.02

Novel location, Cosy berth. Ancient town.
New experience!
James & Pamela Forbes Clod Hill Wigginton Herts. 12.4.97 – 19.4.97

A lovely warm, relaxing week – just what I needed! A great town to wander through and then over to the marshes – a needed trip down memory lane!
Tala Hobson Nottinghamshire 7/11 – 14/11/03

Our first visit to Rye.

Our 4th visit to Rye – Enjoyed it just as much if not more each time!! Weather good as usual – will be back!!

Macbeth

Lovely welcome with tea-tray ready – flat is great- a haven of peace. Rye is super with old-fashioned service.
Best butchers shop we’ve seen for ages.
We’ll be back in the springtime.

Sunny & warm almost all the time.
Very comfortable flat.
Rye Harbour good for birdwatching & walk

Several interesting National Trust properties in the vicinity and had good visits to Great Dixter Garden and Dungeness Power S
