Casa do Calhau Grande is located on the west side of the Island of Madeira, in the town of Calheta, in the village of “Arco da Calheta”. The name of the village was given to it because of the configuration of the surrounding mountains and its proximity to the village of Calheta.
It is about 45 km from the airport (45 minutes) and 30 km from Funchal (30 minutes). Has an 180º view over the Atlantic and is excellently located, close to the sea (7 minutes from Calheta beach) and mountains (15 minutes from Rabaçal), where you can easily explore the maritime coast, the “levadas”, the mountains and the "Laurissilva" forests, through scenic journeys by car, motorbike, bicycle or by foot.
Near Casa do Calhau Grande, by car, you can find some bars, coffees and restaurants, free internet access points, beach, supermarket, banks, a pharmacy, a church and some local stores.
By foot and 100m distance of this self catering house, there is a mini market, a coffee and a market with fruits and fresh vegetables produced by the local farmers.

Description:
You can see old houses in madeiran traditional style, acquired by the current proprietor, in 1995 and reconstructed, by the owner, in 1997 and 2004. The construction was renewed in accordance with the models of the region, with local rock, carefully constructed, in order to protect the surrounding ecology, tracing its original, the harmony and the integration in the landscape.
Casa do Calhau Grande, with a panoramic view of 180º on the Atlantic, fits in the natural, country environment, in perfect harmony with the typical rustic look of the region, and provides a calm, healthy stay of great pleasure.
The Enterprise consists of 6 independent houses, with privacy, in a rustic and comfortable environment, framed for the spectacular beauty that the seaview and the energy of the rocks provide to them.
With private parking, a good choice of gardens, pool, wireless internet access, agricultural land with fruit trees, vegetable gardens and aromatic herbs that are of high biological quality.

We booked this place through its website where the photos were lovely but when we go there we were very disappointed.
It was winter and there were not enough blankets on the bed and insufficient heating, hot water,lighting and kitchen equipment. Also the wash basin was blocked and we had to wash and clean our teeth on the terrace for two days. To do them justice when we managed to contact the owners (who live off site and have no manager at the complex) they did rectify these problems.
But then, to our horror, we discovered the living room and kitchen were infested with mice. There were mice droppings on the cooker and in our food every day. We texted the owners and were put onto their daughter who said, "What do you expect us to do about it". Finally they supplied mouse traps reluctantly saying the infestation must be our fault, not theirs, as we must have left the doors open!
The final straw was when we discovered a cockroach in the damp bathroom which had been leaking water from the terrace above.
We contacted the local tourist information who sugested we ask for a refund and the official Complaints Book so that the government would investigate.
The owners refused to provide a refund and the Complaints book and harrassed us saying that we had been determined not to enjoy our stay. We finally left, late at night ,in the pouring rain and went to a hotel.
To sum the experience up I would describe this place as 4 star prices but basic hostel type accomodation and services.
There were many excellent 4 star hotels around which charged slightly less than the 80 euros per night we were being charged at Casa do Calhau Grande. We should have booked in at one of those!

"Palheiro is a lovingly renovated cottage comprising two floors. On the ground floor is a cosy comfortable living room area with its own kitchenette and a bathroom with shower. Upstairs is a large bedroom built from local wood in the eaves of the building. It is a truly warm and welcoming room which - because the land outside rises around it - can also be accessed at the upper floor by a split stable-style door which can be opened at the top half to enjoy the views and fresh air. The cottage enjoys its own little verandah leading to your private manicured garden with a table and chairs where you can sip a glass of wine or take a meal as the sun goes down. There is a lovely outdoors barbecue behind the cottage which is shared with the TENDA apartment next door."

Finding a roundabout, follow the indication “LEDO”.
Turn left at the first intersection on the road Rocha de Gouveia. 1 km later, on the right, is the Road of Massapez. Up until the Calhau Casa Grande.

Casa do Calhau Grande accepts requests from three nights. Casa do Calhau Grande will inform you, by e-mail, the availability and confirmation of the reserves as well as all the conditions.
The reserve will only be considered definite (booked) after the receipt of a deposit (20% of the full payment) by bank transfer which should be made promptly after confirmation of availability from Casa do Calhau Grande. If the transfer is not made within five days, the reserve will be cancelled.
The remaining 80% is paid when checking in, being cash the most convenient.
To cancel a booking, this must be communicated in writing (e-mail) at least 20 days before check in.

Accessibility
We would advise that this is not an ideal place for someone who has difficulty in negotiating steps or who has problems with heights, as well is to recomend that children, between two and eigth years old, must be always controlled by their parents, because this place has stairs, swimming pool and some high balconies! But is exactly the height of this little complex is what makes it so spectacular.
Outside
The swimming pool is 9x5 meters approximately. It was constructed specifically to integrate into the surrounding countryside and the geographic location, offering excellent privacy. The temperature of the water is the same as the surrounding natural temperature. In the summer, it varies between 22 and 28 degrees and in the winter between 14 and 22 degrees.
