Description:
Asturians are very proud of their Celtic heritage; Sidra (cider) and bagpipes are a way of life here and you are welcome at the many local fiestas and events. Food is taken very seriously; everyone stops for lunch , a very sociable affair which should not be missed at one of the many local restaurants and sidrerias (cider houses). Why not try a new sport - canoeing, quad-biking, horse-riding and surfing are all available locally. There is so much to see and do here; you will never be bored.
La Rondita is located at the the edge of our village, with it's own natural spring and surrounded by orchards and beautiful mountain scenery. The River Sella, famous for it's canoeing and salmon fishing, runs close by. The house is detached and has 2/3 bedrooms, sleeping up to 7 people, plus a baby. It has been sympathetically restored by it's English owners who live next door, and is equipped to ensure your comfort. La Rondita is centrally heated.

At the rear of the property is a private garden for your enjoyment. This offers an ouside seating and dining area with a barbeque; somewhere to enjoy the peace and natural beauty of this wonderful location.

Where is Asturias? Asturias is located on Spain's north Atlantic coast, between Galicia and Cantabria. The region is a principality (the heir to the Spanish throne is known as the 'Prince of Asturias') and it's capital is Oviedo. The area is unique in that it offers unspoilt mountain countryside and the unexploited coastline runs very close-by. High in the Picos de Europa mountains live brown bears, golden eagles, wolves, deer and wild boar; about a quarter of the region has been declared a Protected Natural Area. This region is popular with walkers of all ages as you will find routes to suit all abilities, whether by the sea, along mountain tracks and through gorges, or around the lakes near historic Covadonga, the birthplace of Spain. There are even several routes that you can take from your front door, each of differing length and altitude!
The nearest beach is only a 20 minutes drive away, and this coast (known as the Costa Verde as it is so very lush and green) offers a variety of different types of beach, whether you prefer surfing or exploring in caves and rock-pools. Beaches here are clean, peaceful and without a single high-rise building nearby.
This is cider-country so the landscape is covered in orchards, particularly beautiful in Spring when everywhere is covered in apple-blossom and in Autumn, harvest-time. Visitors at this time of year will never be short of a home-grown apple or two to add to their picnics.
Asturias caters for everyone. Locally there are many activities on offer for those who enjoy the challenge or tranquility of the great outdoors:
Canoeing, quad-biking, paint-balling, caving, surfing, mountain-biking, skiing (in season), fishing (salmon and trout are locally available), horse-riding, bird-watching (golden eagles and black vultures can be spotted locally).
Not forgetting sun-bathing, sand-castle building, and shopping of course.
If you fancy exploring either by car or train (there is a station in the village), there are many towns and cities nearby. Nearby Cangas de Onis is a popular destination for visitors, with it's weekly Farmer's Market, an outdoor pool and many cafes, shops and restaurants. It also has a beautiful Roman bridge that spans the Rio Sella. Also nearby is Ribadasella, a pretty seaside town which also hosts a weekly Farmers Market, has it's own beaches, a lovely promenade walk where you can watch the daily catch be brought in before it is taken off to the local restaurants. It is also home of the Tito de Bustillo musuem, where you can see 20,000 year old cave paintings. Llanes, a medieval fishing town is charming with it's cobbled streets, beaches, popular seafront walk and many restaurants and shops.
Also closeby is historic Covadonga and it's lakes (great for hiking). Or visit the Dinosaur Museum in Colunga (this area is also called the Jurassic coast with many beaches boasting dinosaur footprints) and the Cider Musuem in Nava (learn about it's history, significance and production, and even taste a little as well!). Try the cable-car ride at Fuente De or the Funicular railway at Bulnes.
Slightly further afield is Gijon (45 mins drive), a coastal city which is a popular place to visit with beaches, shops, museums as well as a great childrens park and the Cantabrian Botanic Gardens. Oviedo, the regional capital (also 45 mins drive), offers parks, shopping, entertainments and all of the facilities of a large city. And consider cosmopolitan Santander and Bilbao with the modern Guggenheim Museum.
La Rondita can be accessed in a variety of ways. Directions will be provided prior to your arrival.
There is a station in the village and the line serves Oviedo and Santander, as well as many local towns and villages. You can still get to the beach or shops without the car!
