Nestling on the hillside between two tiny mountain hamlets, La Amapola is secluded yet within easy reach of several inviting bars and restaurants and all local amenities. The bustling market village of Periana is a ten-minute drive and the beach half an hour away. The white hilltop villages of the Axarquia, Granada and the Alhambra and the picturesque beaches of Nerja are just some of the nearby attractions.

Description:
The cortijo/farmhouse is very spacious, decorated in traditional Moorish-Andalucian style and equipped with every modern convenience, luxurious bedrooms, library, TV, DVD, stereo and masses of films and CDS plus outdoor barbecue and seating for dining alfresco. Features include polished terracotta floors, exposed beams, handmade tiles and whitewashed walls. The interior is cool and airy even in high summer, thanks to the high ceilings with ceiling fans and the numerous sets of french doors leading out to the terraces and gardens. The house has a very individual feel with lots of little artistic touches. Look out for the lizard motifs, the handmade mosaics and the gorgeous miniature perfume bottle collection.
There are lots of places to relax in sun or shade, read a book, sip a chilled drink and get away from it all. The pool is huge and stunningly situated in an elevated position and, should you fancy a moonlight dip, features underwater lighting! The setting is really beautiful, with 3 acres of gently sloping land dotted with huge olive trees and criss-crossed with little stone paths leading to pretty vine shaded sun terraces and mature gardens with jasmine, hibiscus and bougainvillea. Breathtaking panoramic views of gorgeous unspoilt countryside, Lake Vinuela and the Mediterranean. Your own private paradise! Abundant wildflowers, butterflies and birdlife, no traffic, yet only 30 mins from beaches and an hour from Malaga/Granada.

There are also TV, DVD and video, a large collection of films and a stereo with jazz, folk, soul and classical CDs, not to mention Spanish guitar and flamenco!

Notes on accommodation: The pool, gardens, terraces and all facilities are solely for the use of guests. The farmhouse and the cottage are never let out to different parties at the same time. The caretakers cottage is on site and is completely self contained, with a separate and private entrance, driveway and parking place, and its own gardens and terraces. The caretakers visit the house to water the plants twice a week and clean the pool, and are on hand to offer help or advice if required. A welcome pack with a bottle of wine and some local tapas, a selection of local maps and information leaflets and all basic staples such as tea and coffee are provided for your arrival.

La Amapola is located 25kms inland between Malaga and Granada, only an hour’s drive from both. The nearest village is Periana and the nearest town Velez-Malaga. Seville, Ronda, Cordoba and Nerja are all accessible for a pleasant day trip or a relaxing night away.
Both Malaga and Granada airports are easily accessible from Amapola. (Malaga 55kms and Granada 65kms).
Budget airlines serving these airports include Easyjet, Ryanair, Monarch and BMIbaby. Iberia and British Airways also offer regular and frequent daily flights.
Car hire is essential and there are numerous car hire companies, including Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Hellehollis and malagacarhire.com.
We recommend shopping around for the best deal as prices often vary quite dramatically.

Recommended local attractions include Granada's arabic quarter and the Alhambra Palace, Malaga's Picasso museum and wonderful tapas bars in the centro historico, Cordoba's fabulous Moorish architecture, the beautiful Chorro Gorge, Alhama de Granada's hot springs and the lake at Beremejales. Andalucia is famous for its lively nightlife and colourful fiestas; carnival in February, Semana Santa in March/April and in Periana the annual peach festival, the olive oil fiesta and the fiesta of San Isidro during the summer months. Nearby Alcaucin holds a small but prestigious flamenco festival in August. There are a good selection of excellent local restaurants and pretty hilltop bars nearby, as well as some fabulous seafood restaurants on the coast. The nearest bar and restaurant is about half a mile away at the Villa Turistica, where horseriding and tennis are also available. A selection of delicious tapas and 'raciones' are available at the local bars - ask for our recommendations. For children there is the Aqualand water park in Velez-Malaga, Selwo Adventure park, water sports and pedalo hire on the coast. At the house there are masses of children's books and films, should they get bored of exploring the extensive grounds and swimming in the pool.

Changeover day
Bookings are from Saturday to Saturday. Arrivals after 5pm and departures 9.30am, but we can be flexible about this!
Golf
There are numerous local golf courses within half an hours drive on the coast. The Breviera golf course is an 18 hole course only 25 mins drive from the house.
Beach
Torre del Mar is about half an hour's drive, a typical Spanish beach resort with sandy beach and beachside promenade with numerous ice-cream parlours, cafes and some wonderful seafood restaurants. Nerja beach is about 45 minutes drive, a very pleasant and pretty resort with cliff side beaches and little sandy coves and beachside walks, plus interesting shops and some inviting bars and restaurants.
Ski
Skiing is available during the winter months at Granada's Sierra Nevada, an hour and a half's drive.

Stroll through the olive grove, up a flight of steps cut out of the hillside, to the large pool (10x5m) and viewing terrace set above it. From here the views are truly breathtaking, sweeping down to the lake and sea, with the mountains as a dramatic backdrop. Pool facilities include a shower, 6 sun-beds and a cane-shaded canopy. Guests can relax in the shade of an enormous old olive tree whilst admiring the spectacular views, dine alfresco on the wide terracotta terrace that stretches the length of the house, or sprawl on a hammock under the vines or in the shady enclosed courtyard. The gardens are colourful and fragrant, with bougainvillea, jasmine and oleander. For children (and adults!), the grounds are a treasure trove of natural splendour, with birds, butterflies and even, on one occasion, a wild tortoise! There is unlimited space for children to run about and virtually no traffic passing by, apart from the occasional horse-rider or herd of mountain goats.
