Calahonda is a favourite holiday destination as it is ideally situated right by the sea between Fuengirola and Marbella (both about 10 minutes drive away), and only 25 minutes drive from Malaga Airport.
There's an an excellent bus service along the coast, with buses running every 25 minutes to Fuengirola and Marbella, stopping off at lots of beaches, villages, and attractions on the way.
If you wish to travel further afield in the Malaga (Easterly) direction, a train will whisk you along the coast from Fuengirola via such tourist hotspots as Benalmadena and Torremolinos.
There are many attractions in a westerly direction emminently worthy of serious exploration, including elegant Marbella (where every day is a fashion show), Puerto Banus (up-market marina surrounded by restaurants of every nationality, theme bars and designer shops), the lovely unspoilt town of Estepona (glorious beach & characterful tree-lined promenade), Selwo Adventure Park (where else can you observe hundreds of wild birds of all sizes & species, and from many different countries, as you walk through a stunning semi-tropical valley .........with a net over the top ! ), and Gibraltar (where you can enjoy magnificent cliff-side & ocean views from a cable car, meet the Barbary Apes, explore miles of rock-tunnels, and save serious money on drinks & cigarettes.)
The attractions of the Costa del Sol are not only lined up along the coast. You need only to drive into the mountains inland to discover what some refer to as the "real Spain", those characterful "white" villages hidden away within folds of rock. The nearest, and I think the prettiest, is Mijas, just 15 minutes drive from Dona Lola. The views from the very reasonably-priced restaurants there are nothing less than breathtaking. It just NEEDS to be visited !
And if you decide not to hire a car, but want to see more of the Costa del Sol, no problem. Just book a space on a coach at the Dona Lola reception. There are many organised trips to such spectacular places as Ronda, Nerja, and Seville, and to the less-spectacular, but interesting nevertheless, Tangiers ! You can often partake in a FREE reception trip to Malaga or Mijas, or to the market at Fuengirola.
The Dona Lola resort offers an extremely extensive range of leisure facilities. The outdoor pool begins at a shallow end safe for youngsters, and then just meanders right alongside the sea for 270 feet and under 2 lovely white bridges before reaching the deep end.
Dozens of loungers and umbrellas surround the pool, and it's a lovely place to relax, with the hypnotic sound of the waves lapping up the beach and against the rocky outcrops providing snooze-inducing background music.
There's an area around the pool for the youngsters to gather, with pool-tables.
Our sheltered over 18's swimming pool offers a quieter facility at peak-times. There are loads more loungers & umbrellas here, and you're within easy reach of the bar / bistro in a lovely sun-trap amongst waterfalls & ponds.
Dona Lola is most certainly not short of bars and restaurants. There is the bistro bar in the leisure centre, and the local beach bars, and within a couple of minutes walk from the apartment there are several more good-value bars & restaurants - including English, Chinese, Indian, Spanish, and a reasonably-priced 'open-all-day-buffet-restaurant'.
Within a short driving distance there are theme restaurants at Cabopino, and more upmarket restaurants towards Marbella.
There is a very useful mini-market on the complex offering very reasonable prices on a large variety of produce, and two larger ones just across the main road.
There are tennis courts on the complex, and there are snooker, pool, and table-tennis tables in the indoor leisure centre. There are good places in the sea close by for snorkelling. On beaches within easy reach of the resort you can try water-skiing, jet-biking, sailing, and wind-surfing.
Dona Lola is very much a family resort, and as such children and teenagers are very well catered for. In the summer months there is a children's club with a really nice Spanish events organiser.
A great variety of activities are arranged for all ages throughout the day, from 5-a-side football, tennis / table-tennis competitions, French Boules games, and paella-making demonstrations. There is free evening entertainment throughout the year.
From Dona Lola you can walk along the beach for as long as you want in both directions.
Walking right for thirty minutes will bring you to the attractive harbour village of Cabopino, with it's cheerful beach-bar, a few up-market restaurants, and beautiful beach.
Walking left will take you to La Cala, a more typically Spanish sea-side fishing village, with another nice beach, and lots of bars and good-value restaurants. You'll pass beach-bars (or not! as the case may be) within ten minutes in either direction. You could jump on a bus if you don't fancy the return walk, or get a taxi.
In short, there's everything on Dona Lola that you could possibly want from a Spanish holiday at whatever time of the year.

This air-conditioned penthouse is on the third (top) floor, and has superb unimpeded views of the sea and coast-line from its spacious South-facing balcony. This intimately private balcony has a dining table, 6 chairs, and a couple of loungers. Ideal for spending those long sunny days just relaxing watching the fishing boats and ferries on the ocean right in front of you, and for romantic evenings. There are 3 swimming pools. The largest, at 270 feet long, meanders right by the sea. The second is for over 18's, offering a peaceful alternative to the main pool at peak times. The third is heated and inside our leisure complex, along with fully-fitted gym, saunas, steam-room, jacuzzi, beauty-salon, etc. We have tennis courts, children's playground, mini-market, & several bars & restaurants

We stayed at Dona Lola as we were attending a family wedding. 3 adults and 2 children age 8 & 11. The apartment was very spacious with everything that you could need, the master bedroom was particularly big with an en suite. The views of the Med from the balcony were great and it was great to sit and watch the passing ships & boats. All the swimming pools were excellent maintained including the inside pool.
There are plenty of bars and restaurants within walking distance. Overall a great place to stay. Thank you Brian.

Having read the descriptions etc we arrived at Dona Lola with high expectations and we were not disappointed! The complex and appartment were everything you need for a good relaxing holiday in the sunshine. The appartment was very clean and well equiped- a home from home with great views from the balcony of the sea and the complex. Brian provided great customer service from our first enquiry to after we arrived back home - thank you. We would certainly recommend this property to friends.

Light and spacious master bedroom with 2 single beds (can be together or apart) and en-suite facilities.
Bedrooms 2 & 3 have 2 single beds making this apartment suitable for family accommodation, or six single-sex golfers. There are beautiful sea-views from the master bedroom and shower ! A glass door allows direct access from master bedroom to balcony. All three bedrooms have been individually designed, furnished, and decorated to enhance their different shapes and characters. All have large fitted wardrobes, providing ample storage space for all your clothes, and those bulky suitcases. Plenty of clothes-hangers are provided, so you don't need to pack your own. There's a wall-mounted television in the master-bedroom, and radio / CD player, hair-dryer, and floor safe in wardrobe. All bedrooms are air-conditioned, and heated in the cooler months to your chosen temperature. All six beds have bed-side lights, and English sockets are provided for easy re-charging of mobile phones, cameras etc. A cot is provided, & high-chair.
Bathrooms:
2 bathrooms. Both are fully-tiled and spotlessly clean. Powerful shower over bath in both bathrooms. Both bathrooms have opening windows to the outside, providing excellent ventilation so that that towels and shower-curtains dry quickly, and bathrooms remain dry and condensation-free. Large mirrors with effective overhead lighting, and shaver-sockets, are fitted to both bathrooms. There are ample towel-drying rails, shelves, cup / tooth-brush holders and wall-cabinets. Bidet in master bedroom. Rubber mats for inside baths, and soft absorbent mats for outside baths. The biggest possible electric hot-water tank provides ample hot water for six people. All electricity used is included in the rental price. There are no extras, no meters, and no condensation !
Kitchen:
Brand new kitchen 2006. Very light, and with opening window for good ventilation, and lovely views. Full-size cooker with 4-ring hob & grill with extractor. Giant fridge / freezer, washing machine, microwave, dish-washer, coffer percolators, mixer, and very full complement of utensils and cutlery right down to garlic-press and cherry de-stoner !

Light, airy and characterful lounge, leading onto spacious balcony with stunning views. Thoroughly relaxing ambiance with lovely comfortable settees, and complemented by creative lighting.

Full complement of towels, bed-linen, additional pillows, and cosy blankets for cooler season.
The apartment will be thoroughly clean on your arrival . If your holiday extends to two weeks, then a mid clean will be carried out at the end of your first week, which includes a change of bedding & towels.
Obviously your departure clean is included in the price you pay.
Additional cleaning can be arranged for an additional charge.

Pueto Banus Marina is about 15 minutes drive.

There's a scuba-diving school 20 minutes drive away.
Beach
On beaches within easy reach of the resort you can try water-skiing, jet-biking, sailing, and wind-surfing. There's a diving school at Torreblanca, horse-riding (and horse-racing!) at fuengirola, some cracking bowling greens at very nearby Miraflores, water-parks at Torremolinos and Fuengirola, and a casino at Benalmadena! There are opportunities to partake in a 'jeep safari', or to ride a quad-bike in the 'Sierras' to the North.
If you decide not to hire a car, but want to see more of Spain, then book a space on a coach at the Dona Lola reception. There are regular organised coach-trips to such spectacular places as Ronda, Nerja, and Seville, and to some less-spectacular, but interesting, Tangiers ! You can often partake in a FREE reception trip to Malaga or Mijas, or to the market at Fuengirola.
Accessibility
This is a top-floor penthouse, with stunning views, but the down-side to that there are stairs to climb. There are no lifts at Dona Lola. Childrens' buggies can however be left in the locked entrance hallway. The steps are easily climbeable, but they may also deter some less-active potential guests.
Outside
From this third (top) floor vantage point, the fishing boats can be seen leaving the beach in the morning, and returning to beach-up a few hours later. Larger boats and ships, including cruise ships and the Malaga to Gibralter 'Sea-Cat' ferry, are constantly appearing on, and disappearing from, the horizon. Some of my guests have told me that they have spent quite a large proportion of their holiday on this balcony, just watching nautical life go by. And why not? There are 2 lounger’s, a table, and 6 chairs, so you can dine 'alfresco', and you're not far from the fridge for cool drinks, or the air-conditioned rooms within if things really do get too hot.
It's a good spot for bird-watching too. Mostly you're looking down on them! I provide binoculars to watch the diving birds.
And it's a wonderfully romantic place to sit in the dark, watching the twinkling mast-head lamps on the boats, and on a clear night, lights along the African coast-line.
