Vrchlabí (literally: the top of the Elbe) is the first city the Elbe flows through. It is a typical tourist place with a mountain museum, baroque monastery, a castle with a romantic nature park and in the vicinity, a number of natural monuments. The Giant Mountains are very popular: 8 million visitors come here annually. It is a paradise for hiking as well as a variety of sports, including golf (in Prosečné - 9 miles). Hikers can expect to find unspoilt nature with miles of marked hiking and biking trails. -- There is a wide range of indoor and outdoor facilities for swimming, sauna, massage, tennis, golf, horseback riding or "wellness". -- Popular places include: Hostinné, with Greek and Roman sculptures which have been very carefully restored. -- Špindlerův mlýn and Svaty Petr (St Peter - near Spindleruv Mlyn) with a summer toboggan run and Horní Mísečky which is connected to Spindleruv Mlyn by an elevated railway. Labský důl - (the valley of the Elbe River) has rocky gorges with numerous waterfalls. Pančavský vodopad is the highest waterfall in the Czech Republic (250 m). -- One of the best trails leads from Spindleruv Mlyn to the origin of the Elbe. It winds along a mountain station on the Medvědín, past a lookout tower and a commemorative plaque, beside the "Pančavský vodopad" waterfall and along magnificent wooden houses. This wonderful apartment (half of wood = "Dřevěnice") was completed in 2006 and is very comfortable and tastefully decorated. It is located in a quiet area on the outskirts of Vrchlabí. Situated together with similar cottages, it makes an ideal starting point for a great vacation at the foot of the Giant Mountains. -- In Vrchlabí you can find many shops. -- The house has a large garden with a furnished terrace and barbecue. There is an extra room for storage of bicycles, etc. - Cars can be parked in a parking lot which belongs to the house.
