In the nearby village of Drumnadrochit (just a 15 minute walk away) are several excellent hotels, bars and restaurants as well as a post office, bank, grocery store, hairdresser, petrol stations/garages (one selling autogas) and exhibition centres. The world famous Urquhart Castle is just 3 miles from the cottage and boat trips on Loch Ness for sightseeing or Nessie spotting are easily arranged.
Horse riding, mountain biking, walking and much more are available in the the area surrounding the village but travel a little further afield to watch dolphins in
the Moray Firth, see red deer in Glen Affric, ride on the funicular railway to the top of Cairngorm, walk up the tourist path to the top of Ben Nevis, see the steam train on the Glenfinnan viaduct (as seen in the Harry Potter movie) or just watch out for the buzzards and red kite in the sky above Burnbrae or the red squirrels, roe deer and heron which often visit the garden and nearby burn.
The area is rich in history with museums and visitor centres telling the stories of times past - Culloden battle field, Fort George, Urquhart Castle, Cawdor, the Clansman Centre in Fort Augustus and too many more to mention. Those of you researching your family's Highland connections will find much of interest in the local area and lots of resources available to help you with your search.
If you visit at New Year you will be able to join in the festivities at the annual Hogmanay Street Party in Drumnadrochit. Follow the Pipe Band to the venue, have a dram from the silver quiach and enjoy the traditional highland dancing - no expertise needed - there will be lots of willing teachers!
